mesenger to skype2

messenger to skype announcement

I was cleaning up my mail recently and saw a message from Microsoft with the above image in blue. This to me was kind of a surprise because:

  1. I did not know that Microsoft bought Skype (they bought it in 2011)
  2. It’s obvious that messenger has lost its luster that’s why I used the “kind of” expression.

Here is a part of the message: On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You’ll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet.   I think this move by Microsoft is smart since it would not make much sense to have two messenger like platforms running where one is falling and the other is simply skyrocketing. Even more is that Skype has over 280 million active users monthly and has seen an approximately 100 million new users since Microsoft acquired it. What to expect Expect all your messenger contacts to come over into you Skype account, the messenger application on your computer will not log you in on March 15. Go Mobile – Mobile users can update to Skype, it will be available for Iphone, android devices and Windows Phone 8 very soon. Features include:

  • Instant message, video call and call phones from your PC, Mac, Windows Phone, iPhone, iPad, Android mobile, Kindle Fire and other devices
  • Sharing your screen with friends and family
  • Video call and instant message with your Facebook friends
  • Group video call with up to ten friends at once*
  • And that’s just the start – there’s so much more to explore on Skype

Why will this not apply in Mainland China? Well because there is a local provider in mainland china for Skype called TOM. Conditions * To get group video chat, you’ll need a Skype Premium subscription. ** Newer versions of Messenger will be able to receive the optional upgrade notifications. Older versions will not receive the notifications and you will have to download Skype manually.
